Communications Officer

Location: Hammersmith and Fulham

Salary expectation: £27,000 to £32,000

Reports to: Chief Executive

Line Management: Interim campaign assistants, volunteers, agencies and freelance associates

Hours: Full time – 35 hours per week

Location: The post will be based at the Charity’s office in Brook Green, W14 (nearest stations are Hammersmith, Shepherd’s Bush and Kensington Olympia).


Working within a highly focused women’s cancer research charity, the Communications Officer will work closely with the CEO and 5 strong team of fundraisers to provide media, marketing and information support. This post plays a key role in ensuring our communications are both influential and informative for the full range of our audiences – and that our fundraising is on message, highly engaging and reaches all the right donors. Working alongside the CEO, this role drives forward our media work with passion, tenacity, imagination and good judgement, to help achieve dramatic change and raise awareness of gynaecological cancers.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Fall into three areas – and candidates need passion and skills for all three:

  • PR & media relations, including press office
  • Information development, including translating scientific evidence for a range of audiences
  • Website and social media management and content generation

PR & media relations

  • To be accountable for the implementation of our media work and for the consistent delivery of high-profile, high-impact communications activity
  • To work with the CEO, our researchers and fundraisers to build our role as a powerful communicator of our research findings and of information about the five gynaecological cancers
  • To develop, monitor and deliver a communications plan, achievable objectives, manageable work programme and budget that meets the requirements of our strategic objectives and income targets
  • To lead on the strategy development and implementation of our campaigns: Know Your Body, Get Lippy and awareness activity around Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, Cervical Screen Week and Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month
  • To offer briefings, advice and support on appropriate media messages, techniques and tone, to women and families affected by cancer (our case studies and champions) and the researchers and clinicians who lead our research studies
  • With the CEO to play an active role in anticipating, preparing for and implementing responses to crisis situations, or other situations where there is risk of damage to our reputation, or the wellbeing of staff or our programme
  • To develop a strategic overview of the external media environment (regional, national and international) and an understanding of how best to target our efforts for each programme of research
  • Managing our Press Office function including inquiries from journalists
  • To contribute actively to supporting strategic objectives, including brand building, and growing awareness of Ask Eve, a new public-facing information service on gynaecological cancers
  • To ensure effective communications, and joint working where appropriate across all our research and funding partners

Information provision and content development

  • To support the development of all The Eve Appeal information materials and content. This will include setting up editorial processes and sign off systems, working within the Information Standard protocols and other peer review, fact checking standards and protocols
  • Providing communications support to our specialist nurse information service Ask Eve
  • Translating scientific papers for a range of audiences
  • Drafting, editing and distributing materials for key audiences including press, MPs and policy makers (this role is responsible for the managing our stakeholder database and programme)

Website and social media

  • Develop, manage, update, write content for website and social media
  • Maintaining social media accounts and support the implementation of a social media strategy


  • Developing, managing and acting as the key point of internal contact and gatekeeping for our celebrity and expert ambassadors
  • General admin duties as required to support media and information functions including maintain library system for press cuttings, monitor cuttings and report (for Board papers and other evaluation reports)
  • Working with freelance associates and volunteers on a range of tasks including case studies collection and events.


  • Attend occasional evening and weekend events on behalf of The Eve Appeal
  • To support all members of The Eve Appeal team on an ad-hoc basis as and when required
  • To comply with best practice and legal requirements regarding data protection
  • Be proactive in keeping up to date with developments affecting your work
  • Contribute to team meetings and organisational priorities
  • Carry out other associated duties as may arise, develop or be assigned in line with the broad remit of the post
  • Abide by organisation policies and practices

  • Digital native – comfortable and passionate about all social media channels
  • Excellent written communications skills and ability to translate messages for different audiences
  • Ability to develop information materials for all audiences using scientific evidence


  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in a media and PR position – in-house or agency
  • Excellent written communications skills for a range of audiences
  • Demonstrable experience of developing content for websites, social media and print
  • Some experience of developing media and marketing plans to support fundraising programmes
  • First class project management skills
  • Experience of using media databases and monitoring programmes
  • Excellent telephone manner and ability to deal with a range of stakeholders sensitively (this will include women affected by cancer, scientists and journalists)
  • Highly proficient in use of all media channels – broadcast, print, online, social media


  • Interest in making scientific evidence and data accessible to a range of audiences
  • Interest and passion for making a difference on women’s cancers
  • Interest and ability to work with scientific and medical research teams and practitioners
  • Experience of Public Health England Information Standard systems and protocols
