Policy Research & Advocacy Officer

Salary expectation: £23,000 to £26,000

Index on Censorship is looking for an enthusiastic Policy Research & Advocacy Officer to join its advocacy team on a short-term contract of 6 months, full-time (a part-time role could potentially be considered for the right candidate).

The officer will focus on background policy analysis and research related to Index’s advocacy, but will also work on other advocacy and outreach-related tasks. This may include contributing to communications materials, proof-reading, taking notes at meetings, assisting with events management, attending external meetings or other tasks. The officer will assist with budget and grants management tasks. The officer will report to the Head of Advocacy, but will also work with other members of the team.

Index’s advocacy work covers a wide range of issues related to freedom of expression, for example influencing UK and European legislation and campaigning on international issues. Topics range from media freedom and safety of journalists to freedom of expression online and in the arts, and the impacts of counter-terrorism measures on freedom of expression.

The role involves work outside normal office hours (time off in lieu is offered).


Good research skills and understanding of policy issues

Strong interest in promoting freedom of expression
Master’s degree or equivalent experience


Experience of policy analysis and development
Experience working on (or volunteering or researching) human rights and/or freedom of expression
Campaigning experience
